Why Marinas Require additional insured Status

  • Direct Defense and Indemnity: If a third party is injured on a boat or on the dock near a boat and sues both boat owner and the marina, the boat insurance company will provide a legal defense for the marina and pay settlements on their behalf.
  • Protection Against Subrogation: It prevents the insurance company from paying for a claim and then turning around to sue the marina to recover those costs.
  • Automatic Notifications: The marina is automatically notified by the insurance carrier if your policy is cancelled, non-renewed, or if coverage limits are changed.
  • Primary Coverage: It establishes that the boater's insurance responds first to an incident caused by the vessel, sparing the marina from having to use its own commercial policy and potentially seeing its own premiums increase.
  • Direct Claim Rights: The marina gains the right to file claims directly with the boater's provider for damages to their property (like docks or piers) caused by the boater's vessel.
